WILL OF THOMAS JOYCE
In the name of God Amen. I, Thomas Joyce, of the County of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, being of sound mind and memory but calling to mind the mortality of the body and knowing that it is appointed for all men to die have made and ordained this to be my last will and testament in the manner following.

Item #1- My will is that all my just debts be paid.

Item #2- I give to my beloved wife, Nancy Joyce, the plantation whereon I now live containing three hundred and thirty seven acres. Three Negroes- Ben, Dick, and Hagar. Two horses, two beds, and furniture and as much stock, plantation tools, and kitchen furniture as she may want, my cart and _____ provisions for one year.

Item #3- I give to my daughter, Elizabeth Wilkins, one Negro woman, Zilphia,and her increase.

Item #4- I give to my son, John Joyce, one Negro woman, Lucy, and her increase.

Item #5- I give to my daughter, Fanny Vernon, one Negro, Cinda, and her increase.

Item #6- I give to my daughter, Leashy Wilkins, one Negro boy, George.

Item #7- I give to my daughter, Nancy Sharp, one Negro, Silva, and his increase.

Item #8- I give to my daughter, Margaret Sharp, one Negro, Patt and his increase.

Item #9- I give to my son, Alexander Joyce, one Negro boy, Bob and two hundred acres of land lying in Henry County, Virginia.

Item #10- I give to my son, Thomas Joyce, two Negro boys, Clark and John, also two hundred and eleven acres of land in Henry County, Virginia, one cow and calf, and six hogs.

Item #11- I give to my daughter, Charlotte Joyce, one Negro boy, Peter.

Item #12- I give to my son, Henderson Joyce, two Negroes, Will and _____. One hundred and five acres of land, the lower end of my tract on the Mayo River, also the tract of land left my wife at her death. My set of blacksmith tools and cart and _____ after the death of my wife, one cow and calf and six hogs, also my cupboard which stands in my dwelling house.

Item #13- I give to my daughter, Sally Joyce, one Negro girl, Mary and her increase, one horse and saddle and bridle, one bed and furniture , and one cow and calf, also one cupboard.

Item #14- I give to my two sons,  Thomas and Alexander, my wagon and harness.

Item #15- I give to my four sons, John, Alexander, Thomas, and Henderson all of my working tools to be equally divided between them. My will and desire is that after the death of my wife, the Negroes and other property left to her, be sold and the money arising there from be equally divided between all my children, son and daughters.

Lastly- My desire is that my body be buried in a Christian like manner at the direction of my executors herein named and I do hereby appoint my sons, Thomas and Henderson, my executors to this my last ill and testament as witnessed my hand and seal this 27th day of November, 1840.
